SIBU: A total of 145 students from 19 secondary schools participated in the three-day Toastmasters International 18th Youth Leadership Camp (YLC) 2023 at the Sibu Diocesan Pastoral Centre in Jalan Kemunyang here.

Themed ‘I am Possible’, the camp, which is running from Aug 26 to 28, was organised by the Swan City Toastmasters Club.

Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh said that the camp enabled the students to mix around and interact with one another.

“Connect yourself to the right people. Later on in life, whether you succeed or not, it depends on what sort of people you meet and what sort of associations you have,” he said in his speech at the camp’s opening ceremony here today (Aug 27).

Wong also emphasised the importance of knowledge and skills, especially those needed in this modern era.

“With more skills and knowledge, you can do things in a competent manner,” he said.

He advised the participants not to underestimate themselves and not to compare their lives with others. Instead, he encouraged them to focus on their goals.

“Life must have a destiny, aim, and direction. Follow through all the way until you reach the destination,” he said.

Among the activities organised are speech workshops, talent time, motivational sessions, impromptu speech workshops, team-building games, and more.

At the ceremony, Wong also donated RM10,000 to the Swan City Toastmasters Club for its activities.
