KUCHING: Agrotourists can look towards Sarawak for an unparalleled agrotourism experience as the state offers bountiful agricultural treasures.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this could increase high-yield tourists who appreciate the real essence of Sarawak’s land, cuisine and traditions.
He said it is crucial to recognise that this is not just about agrotourism but also about complementing it with ecotourism to further enrich the experience for tourists.
Moreover, agrotourism is not just a pathway to attract visitors, it is a means to uplift the communities and facilitate rural development.
“Community-based tourism, an integral part of agrotourism, empowers our local residents by directly engaging them in tourism activities.
“This involvement brings not only economic benefits but also reinforces the values of preserving our farming, ecological, and cultural environments,” he said.
Abang Johari’s text of speech was read out by his deputy Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at the launch of the inaugural Sarawak Agrotourism Conference & Expo (SAtCE) 2023 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.
Agrotourism, he said, represents not only a new tourism product but a niche and highly sought-after experience that holds the key to promoting Sarawak’s unique features to the world.
“As we gather here, we recognise that sustainable and responsible tourism is not merely about numbers but about attracting high-quality visitors, especially those with more disposable incomes.
“These discerning tourists seek authentic experiences, rich with culture and flavour, and are willing to pay for the value that they receive. They will also tend to stay longer in Sarawak to have a more fulfilling experience,” he added.
Sarawak’s focus on sustainable forestry, such as bamboo plantations, indigenous fruits, and herbs, will not only enrich agrotourism experiences but also contribute to environmental preservation.
“Let us also acknowledge the significant impact of agrotourism on reducing our carbon footprint.
“By practising sustainable farming, permaculture, and recycling farm waste, we embrace a greener, more environmentally conscious approach to tourism and agriculture,” he said.
Abang Johari said benefits of agrotourism extend beyond economic gains as they encompass, rural development, community participation and job creation.
The sector opens up employment opportunities, both full-time and part-time, creating a new job market for university graduates and school leavers.
“As we venture into agrotourism, we are also nurturing entrepreneurship opportunities in Sarawak. The sector gives rise to hospitality ventures such as homestays, tourist guides, and downstream agricultural products.
“We are fostering an ecosystem of economic growth that benefits not only our visitors but also our local entrepreneurs and communities,” he said.
In line with the state’s broader vision for Sarawak’s progress, agrotourism plays a significant role in the Sarawak government’s Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) initiative, which focuses on social inclusivity and driving economic and social benefits for all Sarawakians.
By diversifying income streams and exploring downstream business opportunities in agrotourism Sarawak aims to increase farmers’ income and alleviate poverty.
“While agrotourism may not be entirely new, its potential in this region remains at an infancy stage.
“Sarawak boasts of existing farms, infrastructure, and facilities that can be strategically promoted to place our state at the forefront of agrotourism,” he added.
By offering a distinct and unique tourism product, Abang Johari is confident agrotourism can elevate Sarawak’s recognition beyond the regular and common offerings in tourism promotions.
He hoped that through the conference and expo, Sarawak can further promote investment within the agrotourism ecosystem, encouraging the development of new infrastructure, accommodation, downstream food production, tourism services, among others.
Minister of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom and Derrisen Sdn Bhd Project director Karen Goi were among those present.
