KUCHING: Sustainable housing solutions are needed to tackle the rising population, escalating urbanisation and the impacts of climate change, said Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The Deputy Premier called for prioritised affordable, energy-efficient, and resilient housing designs that minimise resource consumption and contribute to a lower carbon footprint.

“Incorporating renewable energy sources such as solar panels and geothermal heating into housing developments can reduce energy demand and reliance on fossil fuels, while green building materials and smart technologies can enhance energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and overall comfort for residents,” he said.

He was giving a talk on ‘Advancing Sustainable Healthcare and Housing for Sustainable Future’ at the 2023 World Green and Sustainability Summit themed ‘Building a Better Future Through Green Growth’ at USCI Hotel here yesterday (Sept 4).

Dr Sim, who is also the Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, said sustainable housing initiatives should also focus on urban planning that encourages walkability, promotes green spaces, and supports public transportation systems.

“This not only reduces congestion and air pollution but also fosters healthier and happier communities,” he said.

He pointed out that affordable housing projects that consider the needs of low-income individuals and families are equally crucial in creating an inclusive and sustainable society.

“In Sarawak, the government under Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is introducing several initiatives to reduce the environmental impact,” he said.

Among them, he said, is the Bukit Assek Redevelopment Project.

“The Sarawak government has also launched several waste management initiatives such as the Zero Waste campaign and 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) campaign, and introduced several waste disposal facilities such as landfills and waste-to-energy plants,” he added.

Apart from that, he said the state government has adopted the Green Building Index (GBI) as the official green building rating system.

Earlier, Abang Johari officiated at the summit and delivered his keynote address.
