KOTA SAMARAHAN: Contractors working on development projects in Sarawak have been given a one-month rule to demonstrate their commitment to project completion.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas announced this rule to ensure timely progress on various infrastructure projects.

“For example, the rule applies to a 7km road project from Kampung Tanjung Bako road leading to the Batang Samarahan bridge.

“Contractors for this project were given a one-month period starting from Aug 8 to show substantial progress. If they fail to meet this deadline, their contracts may be terminated.
Uggah, who is also the Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, stressed that the rule is intended to keep contractors on track and ensure timely completion of development projects.

During a site visit to the Sejingkat-Samarahan bridge project on Tuesday (Sept 5), he provided updates on various projects.

The Sejingkat-Samarahan bridge project progress is at 21.86 per cent, and the project has a budget of RM365mil. The target completion date is June 25, 2025.

The upgrading of the existing road of Kampung Tanjung Bako has a budget of RM37mil and is 46 per cent complete. It is expected to be fully completed by April 2024.

The 7km road (Kampung Tanjung Bako to Batang Samarahan bridge) is slated for completion in February 2026.
Uggah stated that efforts have been made to ensure that the development projects do not turn into ‘sick’ projects.
“There will be very strict monitoring, because the people expect the project to be completed on time as they need better service.

“The state government is committed to providing the service for the people, and at the same time, with the road being completed, it will assist the economic growth in the area.”

Despite challenges, Uggah expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far, as reported by the Public Works Department (JKR).
