SIBU: Sibujaya could become a leading sports hub in Sarawak.

The Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, Michael Tiang Ming Tee, highlighted the township’s remarkable sports offerings including motocross tracks and Azman Hashim Community Sports Centre.

The centre features an indoor sports hall suitable for basketball, volleyball, futsal, and badminton.

Furthermore, it has amenities for field events, football pitches, petanque courts, and an IAAF-approved eight-lane race track.

“Sibujaya has transformed into a modern, organised township, emerging as a new hub for diverse sports.

“We now have a place where they can engage in various sports and enjoy watching sports events over weekends,” he said this at the closing ceremony of the GP Sibu Jaya Extreme Motocross Challenge on Sunday.

Highlighting the motocross event, the Pelawan assemblyman sees Sibujaya as the perfect spot to promote motocross to locals and visitors.

“With the Sibujaya track now being one of the three official motocross tracks, this is a significant boost for Sibu, especially its tourism and sports sectors,” Tiang added.

He hoped the motocross event will grow bigger next year, drawing more international extreme sports fans.

The recent GP Sibu Jaya Extreme Motocross Challenge saw nearly 100 competitors spanning seven categories. They vied for cash awards totalling more than RM23,000.

Participants included those from Sarawak, Indonesia, and Brunei Darussalam, aged between 12 and 68.
