SIBU: A 30-year-old man claimed trial at the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday to a charge of assisting in concealment of stolen property.
The accused surnamed Goh pleaded not guilty to the charge, framed under Section 414 of the Penal Code, through an interpreter before Magistrate Stella Augustine Druce.
According to the charge, he allegedly did assist of dishonestly concealed motor vehicle parts while having reason to believe that the same were stolen property in October, 2019, at a garage in Jalan Oya.
Section 414 of the Penal Code reads that, “Whoever voluntarily assists in concealing or disposing of or making away with property which he knows or has reason to believe to be stolen property shall be punished with imprisonment term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or both; and if the stolen property is a motor vehicle or any component part of a motor vehicle as defined in section 379A, shall be punished with imprisonment term of not less than six months and not more than seven years, and shall also be liable to fine”.
During the court’s proceedings, prosecuting officer Inspector Norfadilah Zainal urged that the accused to be released on cash bail of RM6,000 with two sureties pending trial.
However, Goh represented by legal counsel Boston Ho requested for a lower sum of bail bond on the grounds that the accused had always dutifully attended the case and poses no risk of jumping bail.
The court granted the accused to be released pending trial on bail bond of RM2,000 in two local sureties and set further management of the case to Sept 14.
