SERIAN: Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem has called for the urgent need for repairs to be carried out on the suspension bridge located in Kampung Tema Mawang.
The Serian MP underscored that the responsibility for these repairs lies with the local council and pledged his unwavering commitment to ensuring the swift restoration of the vital bridge.
He highlighted the pressing need for maintenance due to the substantial number of people who gather on the suspension bridge during the Serian Rafting Challenge.
“The event has gained considerable popularity, with spectators coming to witness the rafts departing from the Kampung Tema Mawang river and embarking on their journey towards the Kampung Tebakang Dayak river.
“This annual event, now in its official 11th edition, began humbly with just 10 rafts many years ago but has since grown substantially.
“Currently, 184 rafts and teams participate, transforming it into a vibrant festival. I believe there are more than 2000 people gathered here today to watch the flag-off of the competition,” he said after a flag-off ceremony during the Serian Rafting Challenge at Kampung Tema Mawang here today (Sept 9).
Riot expressed pride in the event’s diverse participation, encompassing various departments and agencies, including educational institutions like Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).
“The event has garnered involvement from numerous government departments and institutions of higher learning, along with the engagement of non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
“Notably, participants have come from as far as Kuala Lumpur and Kelantan, rendering the Serian Rafting Challenge an international affair.
“Even a popular Sarawakian influencer, NgekTsai, is participating in the event,” said Riot.
Among those present were Tebedu District Officer Joseph Liaw, Serian Resident’s Office administrative officer representing Serian Resident Wee Chung Yee, Siburan acting District Officer Ranum Bari, and Tourism, Creative Industries, and Performing Arts Ministry assistant secretary Mona Octavia Sulai Albans Meling.
