KUCHING: Two friends were each sentenced to 12 months in prison by the Magistrate’s Court today (Sept 12), for stealing a motorcycle belonging to a 44-year-old man last month.
Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan handed down the sentence to Mohd Hafiq Hassen, 28, and Shahrizal Tanggal, 20, both of whom pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 379A of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same Code.
The offence took place at a flat in Taman Sri Makmur, at about 5.30 pm on August 29.
Based on the facts of the case, the complainant, who had parked his motorcycle in the flat’s parking lot, discovered that his vehicle was missing and suspected it had been stolen.
A police report was filed for further action and an investigation led to their arrest during ‘Ops Lejang Khas’ on Sept 10 in Kampung Bintawa Ulu.
During the investigation, it was determined that Shahrizal and Mohd Hafiq had stolen the complainant’s motorcycle as there were witnesses, who saw them committing the crime.
Insp Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang prosecuted the case while, Shahrizal and Mohd Hafiq were unrepresented by counsels.
