KUCHING: Federal Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil has urged the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) to enhance its safety net for media practitioners, with a particular focus on part-time contributors commonly known as ‘stringers’.
He pointed out the necessity for Perkeso to develop mechanisms that offer extended protection and a more comprehensive social safety net for media practitioners serving as stringers during their assignments.
He noted the growing trend of organisations and media companies employing stringers whose social safety coverage is less comprehensive compared to full-time staff.
“In the coming one to two weeks, we hope to have a meeting with Socso (Perkeso) to discuss and expand social security for stringers. I am committed to supporting this cause to ensure the stability and wellbeing of Malaysia’s media ecosystem. Our objective is not only to assist journalists and staff currently facing challenges but also to strengthen the overall local media industry,” Fahmi explained.
He made these remarks during his visit to Irwan Budi Annuar, a 49-year-old show producer at Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) who is battling health issues, at his residence in Jalan Bako, Petra Jaya on today (Sept 14).
Irwan Budi, who has dedicated about 20 years of service to RTM, is currently grappling with kidney and lung complications, alongside deteriorating vision.
The father of three, whose children are aged 19, 17 and 15, was transferred to Kuching from RTM Limbang as his health worsened over the past year.
During his visit, Fahmi presented a donation from Tabung Kasih@Hawana to Irwan Budi to alleviate his financial burden.
“My hope is that through this initiative, we can assist more individuals in need. We have provided a donation to him and discussed ways to address his situation. Each case we encounter may have its unique challenges. I intend to use this opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of these challenges and find more comprehensive, sustainable solutions,” Fahmi stated.
The Tabung Kasih@Hawana was established in conjunction with National Journalists Day (Hawana). Its mission is to support media practitioners, former media personnel, and veteran journalists who require assistance.
This initiative, initiated by the Ministry of Communications and Digital and implemented through the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) since April 14 this year, aims to help members of the media community who are facing hardships and challenges in life.
Fahmi is presently on a working visit to Sarawak, which extends from Thursday until Sunday, in celebration of Malaysia Day. The Malaysia Day celebration is scheduled to take place at the Perpaduan Stadium, Petra Jaya this Saturday.
