KUCHING: A tattoo artist hopes to witness the growth of the tattoo industry in Kuching, not only in the art of tattooing but also in the appreciation of it.

Denny Lee Zhing Ping, the owner of Space Studio Tattoo, expresses his aspiration for people to embrace a minimalist style of tattooing alongside the traditional tattoo artistry of Sarawak.

“At Space Studio Tattoo, we specialise in Korean-style tattoos, known for their minimal and small designs. We hope to see more people being open to and appreciative of this style,” he shared.

“In our studio, we follow the concept of emotional tattoos, where individuals get inked to remember something or someone dear to them,” he explained.

Lee mentioned that, out of respect for the local culture, he does not incorporate traditional Sarawakian tattoo elements into his designs.

However, he infuses a touch of local essence while maintaining the minimal and special aspects, catering to his clients’ preferences.

“I don’t possess extensive knowledge about traditional Sarawak tattoos, which is why I keep the designs minimal yet special. I remember a client who requested a bunga terung (eggplant flower) tattoo in honour of her late grandmother. The design was minimal, but we made it special for her as a remembrance,” he recalled.

He shared these thoughts while speaking to the media during the second anniversary of Space Tattoo Studio and the Space Tattoo Flash Day at its Kuching location on yesterday (Sept 15).

On a different note, Lee hopes that through tattoo art, people can change their perceptions about individuals with tattoos.

“Some people mistakenly associate tattoos with being a ‘bad’ person, which is not the case. Through our approach, we aim to shift their perspective and open their minds to the art of tattooing.”

Additionally, the Space Tattoo Flash Day and Space Market events will run from Friday until Sunday (Sept 17).
