SRI AMAN: Tragedy struck during a Dabai fruit-picking trip in Ulu Skrang yesterday (Sept 16) when a 25-year-old man went missing after being swept away by the strong current of Skrang River.

The victim, identified as Fresly Setipin, was accompanied by seven friends on their quest to find Dabai fruits near Rh Nanga Belaik.

Upon reaching the river, they waited for the water level to recede before attempting the crossing.

However, the river current overpowered Fresly and swept him away swiftly. Despite the valiant efforts of his friends to rescue him, their attempts proved futile.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said they had received an emergency call around 2.55pm regarding the incident.

Firemen from Betong station were promptly despatched to the scene to initiate a search and rescue (SAR) operation with the police and Civil Defence Force (APM).

The incident occurred about 38km from Betong town.

At the time of writing, there have been no new updates on the search due to the lack of network coverage at the scene.
