KUCHING: A sum of RM2 million is needed to conduct the Jepak state by-election, involving 446 election workers.

Election Commission (EC) deputy chairman Dr Azmi Sharom said 15 voting centres and 46 polling streams, including one early voting centre and early polling stream, will be set up for the by-election.

The 2023 Supplementary Electoral Roll, which was updated as of Sept 15 this year, will be used for the by-election and it will be sold starting Oct 16.

“The Jepak state seat has 22,804 eligible registered voters, 22,761 are ordinary voters and 43 members of the police force,” he said.

Speaking at a press conference after chairing a special meeting on the by-election at Menara SPR in Putrajaya today, Azmi said Balai Raya Kampung Jepak will be used as the nomination centre and vote tallying centre.

The EC, he said, will appoint a returning officer (RO) who will be assisted by three assistant ROs to conduct the by-election.

The EC will also set up two election campaign enforcement teams, comprising the police, local authorities and representatives of candidates contesting in the polls, he added.

Meanwhile, voters can check their voting information, including voting centre and polling stream at https://mysprsemak.spr.gov.my or contact SPR Hotline at 03-8892 7018/ 7218/ 7124 or through the MySPR Semak application, starting Oct 16.

The EC has set Nov 4 as the polling day for the Jepak state seat by-election with nomination of candidates to be held on Oct 21, while early voting is set for Oct 31.

The by-election is forced by the death of its incumbent, Datuk Talib Zulpilip, 72, on Sept 15, due to kidney complications.

The late Talib, a former minister in the Sarawak Chief Minister’s Office (Integrity and Ombudsman), served as Jepak assemblyman for six terms since 1996.
