IPOH: Sunway Group (Sunway) is committed to addressing food security through its 20-acre organic farm at Sunway City here with a target production of at least 150,000 kilogrammes of vegetables per year by 2030.
Its founder and chairman Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah said the Sunway Organic Farm produces chemical and pesticide-free fruits and vegetables with water from the mountains and natural springs.
He said Sunway, through its agri-tech arm, Sunway XFarms, was also operating Kuala Lumpur city centre’s largest indoor vertical farm.
“This urban farm supplies more than 13,000 kilogrammes of fresh vegetables per month to the surrounding urban communities,” he said in his keynote address at the Pertubuhan Rakan Komuniti Pendidikan Negeri Perak Hi-Tea ceremony here.
He said the initiatives by Sunway were at transforming the agricultural industry in Malaysia into a knowledge-intensive sector with high-income jobs for the people.
Cheah said Sunway was also replicating its Sunway City Kuala Lumpur model in other townships in the country, and one of them is at Iskandar Puteri in Johor.
“At Sunway City Iskandar Puteri, we are developing Nature’s Capital City,” he said, adding that the natural beauty in the area, such as the seafront facing Singapore across the Johor Straits, the seven-kilometre Pendas River and mangrove forests will be preserved.
He said Sunway was also planning to open a five-star Banjaran Mangrove resort amidst the mangrove forests along the Pendas River.
There will also be a multi-purpose motor circuit spanning 100 acres and comprising a world-class 4.5-kilometre race track that will establish Sunway City Iskandar Puteri as the hub of motoring tourism in the region, he added.
Another is an equestrian park that is home to 600 horses, complete with supporting amenities such as a horse spa and a clinic.
“With the city being just a 5-minute drive away from the Second Link to Singapore, there is an enormous potential for significant economic spill-over impact for Johor and Malaysia,” he added. – BERNAMA
