KUCHING: Sarawak is striving to generate Intellectual Property (IP) through investments in research and development under the Post-COVID 19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2023, said Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee.
The Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development said the state’s current registered patents stood at less than 50.
“By 2030, we aim to increase our ownership of patents, however, we do not want to just own IP, these must be realised into viable and profitable economic returns to the state.
“We should not be registering and owning patents just to add to numbers but should ensure that any patents that are successfully registered and owned, leads to an eventual commercial outcome,” he said.
Dr Annuar said this when delivering the inaugural address at the two-day workshop titled “Patent Specification Writing,” organised jointly by Sarawak Research and Development Council (SRDC) and MyIPO, held on Sept 26 and 27 at i-CATS University College.
Meanwhile, the general manager of SRDC Ts. Dr Peter Morin Nissom, in his welcoming speech, introduced the workshop as an SRDC initiative to create awareness among the stakeholders and to provide knowledge and skills on preparing IP specifications.
“The two-day workshop presents a platform for participants to discuss translating their research to impactful outcomes that will benefit the community and the economy, and protect their IP,” he explained.
During the event, Intan from MyIPO, Louis Tang from Twin Catalyst, and Dr Mohd Helmi from i-CATS University College shared their knowledge and expertise on patent and intellectual property registration and ownership to a group of 60 participants.
