KUCHING: As Sarawak is ramping up its effort to battle against cervical cancer, the KASIH Keluarga: Sarawak Cervical Cancer Screening Campaign has garnered overwhelming response, with more than 1,300 women registered to take the human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA test.
In a region where rate of cervical cancer is notably high, this campaign is a crucial step in the fight for women’s health and well-being of families.
Despite the high rate of cervical cancer in Sarawak, the response to this campaign is a testament to the growing awareness among women to engage in preventive measures.
New Sarawak Tribune spoke to several women, who have come forward to take the test, to gain insights into the motivation behind their participation.

I came to take the HPV DNA test and to understand more about cervical cancer and HPV, and to make sure that I am free from cervical cancer. As a woman, we know the risks involved with HPV and cervical cancer, especially it being the highest rate in Sarawak. Before it develops into something worse, we as women need to take care of our health.
ELIZABETH ARMI, 31

Participating in this programme is an important step towards self-care and to know more about the diseases that can affect women. As this is my first time taking the test, I hope that more women will come forward to participate in such health initiatives, not just for our own well-being but for the health of our families.

I was encouraged by my colleagues to come forward and get tested. There’s no shame in getting tested; in fact, it’s a responsible choice. This initiative is a golden opportunity for women across Sarawak to prioritise their health and take preventive measures.
MARNEY KEN WILLIAM, 41

Testing is not just about individual health; it is also about community health. It is important for women to understand and partake in preventing diseases that can easily turn into cancer if left untreated. Sometimes, we don’t seek out sickness, but it can find a way into our life.
