KUCHING: A workshop is currently underway as part of the preparations to nominate Sarawak Delta Geopark for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognition next year.
This two-day workshop, which concludes tomorrow (Oct 4), has gathered 30 officers from various governmental agencies. Among them are representatives from the Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts of Sarawak, the Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, the Sarawak Forestry Corporation, the Department of Land and Survey Sarawak, Kuching North City Hall (DBKU), Kuching South City Council, Sarawak Tourism Board, Bau District Council, and University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).
The Director of the Forest Department Sarawak, Datuk Hamden Mohammad, officiated at the ceremony at the Waterfront Hotel.
In his statement, Hamden said that preparations for the nomination are of paramount importance, requiring meticulous planning to meet the standards and conditions established by UNESCO.
“There are few preparation have been done such as the arrangement of the Geopark planning that consists of goals, vision and objective.
“This is also including the natural resources conservation plan, public education plan, tourism activities alongside the conservation of culture and history,” he said.
The workshop aims to produce a detailed roadmap for the Aspiring Sarawak Delta UNESCO Global Geopark.
