KUCHING: Timberland Medical Centre (TMC) achieved a significant milestone yesterday with the unveiling of its first in Asean cutting-edge mammography systems.
Minister for Women, Early Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said these state-of-the-art systems are poised to advance breast cancer screening and diagnosis, catering not only to the population of Sarawak but also to medical tourists across Borneo.
“Breast cancer is a pressing concern in Malaysia, accounting for 34.1 per cent of all cancer cases among women.
“Alarmingly, awareness of breast cancer screening in Sarawak remains insufficient, with only 398 cases reported among 1.2 million women until 2019. To combat this issue, TMC’s investment in advanced technology is a game-changer,” she said.
She said this when speaking at the launching of the mammography systems, including 3D Full Field Digital Mammography (FFDM) with Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) and Contrast Enhanced Spectral Mammography (CESM) at Level 3, Timberland Medical Centre here.
The newly introduced mammography systems include 3D Full Field Digital Mammography (FFDM) with Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) and Contrast Enhanced Spectral Mammography (CESM).
Meanwhile TMC Board of Director, Dr Tiong Hung Hui said these systems not only provide superior image quality but also offer comfort during screening and minimally invasive biopsy procedures with low radiation exposure.
“The 3D Mammography with DBT allows for a comprehensive view of breast images in multiple cross-sectional layers, similar to CT scan images,” he told reporters yesterday.
According to Dr Tiong, CESM can classify both visible and hidden breast lesions as malignant or benign, facilitating informed decisions for breast surgeons regarding conserving surgery or mastectomy.
“TMC’s commitment to transforming patient care standards is evident through this substantial investment. The medical centre aims to enhance its Centre of Excellence in breast care, benefiting women in Sarawak and across Borneo,” he said.
