KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has expressed his hope that the European Union (EU) could provide support for high-quality education exchanges.
He stated his desire to establish special exchange programmes, particularly in the field of technology, between the EU and higher education institutions in the state.
“I know Sweden, one of the Nordic regions, has expertise in converting waste into energy. For example, using waste materials like plastic for construction and reinforcing roads to promote a circular economy and environmental conservation.
“All of this depends on an economic cycle that doesn’t discard waste but uses it for economic development,” he said.
Abang Johari said this in his speech at the Homecoming Dinner in conjunction with the 50th anniversary celebration of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sarawak held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching last night (Oct 15).
In addition to student exchanges, Abang Johari also encouraged the EU to invest in Sarawak’s projects through the European Investment Bank.
He added that the EU had shown interest due to Sarawak’s unique environmental and sustainable policies.
“In supporting environmental efforts, Sarawak strives to use hydrogen technology in public transportation, being the first in the region. This is a significant step towards green mobility.”
He also urged UiTM alumni with expertise in various disciplines to build networks and collaborate for the benefit of the community and the state of Sarawak.
