KUCHING: The establishment of a Marine Fisheries Enforcement Base in Bintulu is needed under the upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP).

Deputy Director-General of Fisheries (Development), Bohari Leng said that Sarawak currently has five active bases located in Santubong, Tanjung Manis, Mukah, Lawas, and Miri.

“We’re looking into adding a Bintulu base to these existing locations. The final decision depends on budget approvals. If we get the green light from 13MP, we might set up a new office there, which could also serve as a centre for fisheries protection and enforcement,” he said after officiating at the Handover Ceremony of new patrol boats by the Sarawak Department of Marine Fisheries at the Santubong Resource Protection Base at Jalan Sultan Tengah, here, today.

He hoped that this proposal will receive consideration to ensure the effective and comprehensive operation of fisheries in Sarawak’s main waters.

“Although it’s still early for me to confirm, from a planning perspective, we do intend to establish another Fisheries base in Bintulu,” he added.
