KUCHING: The Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) and BorneoTalk held their first-ever Mee Jawa Masterclass / Challenge at Centexs Lundu on Oct 21.

The programme, under their BorneoGoodEats initiative, is part of the Centexs Community Technical Outreach Programme (CTOP).

According to Centexs, the event  aligned with BorneoGoodEats’ mission to find the best Mee Jawa in Kuching.

“The Mee Jawa Masterclass, led by Chef Wira from Grand Margherita Hotel, taught participants the basics of making delicious Mee Jawa.

“This was part of a five-module workshop series covering Personal and Food Hygiene, Plating, Food Photography, and Digital Poster Design, helping participants promote their Mee Jawa effectively,” they said in a statement yesterday (Oct 23).

They said that the Mee Jawa Challenge was a cook-off between five teams, each made up of three to four contestants, all competing to create the most delicious and innovative Mee Jawa.

“Each team was given some mystery ingredients to use in their dishes, adding an exciting twist. The kitchen was buzzing with tension and excitement as teams raced against the clock.

“Some teams, experienced in making Mee Jawa, cooked with confidence, while others faced challenges perfecting their Mee Jawa gravy.”

The plating, or presentation, of the dishes was an exciting highlight, with contestants aiming for an artistic display and at the end of the challenge, each team presented their Mee Jawa to the judges.

“After careful consideration, Group D, with members Wayne Robson Gregory, Vince Fong Yu Xuan, and Paul Willer Logie, won the top prize.

“Their clever use of the torch ginger flower, an unusual ingredient in traditional Mee Jawa, added a unique touch to their dish,” they said.

Centexs said that the event also awarded subsidiary titles such as Best Photography won by Muhammad Imran, Best Hygiene won by Group A, Best Team Leader (Daniel Then Wee Lee from Group B) and Most Innovative award goes to Group C.

The prize-giving ceremony took place at Centexs Lundu, with Dr Nor Ashikin Abdul Rahman, the Head of Campus at Centexs Lundu, in attendance.
