KUCHING: Two hundred and forty residents from the longhouses in Temedak recently attended the environmental education programme organised by the Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB).
The programme, themed ‘Sustainable Environment, Smart Community’, was held in collaboration with Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) Betong Division, Betong Division Health Office, the Betong District Council and the Centre of Technical Excellence (CENTEXS) Betong.
This initiative was in tandem with the National Environmental Day celebrated on October 21 annually and in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reflecting the commitment of the Sarawak community to environmental stewardship.
The programme aimed to educate the local community about the importance of environmental conservation and foster stronger relationships between government agencies and the local community.
Among the activities were talks on haze and open burning from NREB, river cleanliness talks from the DID of Betong Division, talks on rabies from the Betong Division Health Office, a demonstration of composting conducted by CENTEXS Betong Division and a colouring competition for schoolchildren.
Also present to officiate at the closing ceremony were Betong Resident Richard Michael Abunawas, deputy controller of Environmental Quality Sarawak Paul Bond Chamberlin; and head of village Jang Tibu.
