KUCHING: Masjid Jamek Sarawak here saw a turnout of around 3,000 Muslim devotees who gathered last evening (Oct 26) for prayers for Palestine.
The mosque authorities, with the assistance of traffic police, efficiently controlled the flow of traffic as early as 5.30 pm, ensuring the smooth arrival of members of the public.
Early devotees included Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi and his wife, arriving as early as 6 pm.
Notable figures like Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) president Datuk Misnu Taha and Sarawak Mosque Welfare Trust (LAKMNS) chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai were also seen at the event.
The assembly started with a congregational Maghrib prayer at around 6.40 pm, followed by a programme of supplication (Munajat) by the attendees.
The highlight of the event was a recitation of Surah Yasin, led by the chief imam of Sarawak Datuk Mustapha Kamal Ahmad Fauzi.
Following the recitation, the congregation collectively recited the ‘tahlil’ (a form of remembrance), expressing their solidarity with Palestine.
The gathering ended with the Isyak prayer, offered in congregation.
Simultaneously, mosques and suraus across Sarawak conducted similar gatherings the same evening.
