BINTULU: The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has proven its position as a major force in the formation of the federal government in the past two terms.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof emphasised that GPS cannot achieve political strength unless its members foster unity among themselves.
He asserted that due to the spirit of unity among its members, the party has gained the support of the people.
“This support is due to the fact that people see GPS as having a clear vision, initiatives, and well-structured governance plans,” he said during a dinner with Bintulu Melanau Association at a hotel here on Friday night.
The event was also attended by GPS candidate for the upcoming Jepak by-election, Iskandar Turkee.
Fadilah further said that the decision of the component parties of GPS, including Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), to leave the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition after the 14th General Election (GE14) and formed GPS was aimed at ensuring Sarawak’s progress in line with its own direction.
He highlighted that this decision proved to be correct when GPS, led by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, successfully governed Sarawak, leading to increased income and pioneering new economic sectors, setting an example for other states.
Fadilah, who is also the senior vice president of PBB, urged GPS members not to become complacent, especially in the face of the upcoming by-election in Jepak on Nov 4.
Although GPS is expected to face no obstacles or problems in retaining the Jepak seat, he called on GPS members to remain vigilant and maintain momentum to ensure that more voters fulfil their responsibilities on Nov 4.
