BINTULU: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is ramping up its campaign efforts for the Jepak by-election, focusing on introducing its candidate, Iskandar Turkee, to the community.
GPS election director Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said that despite Iskandar being a local, there are still some who may not be familiar with him.
With just six days remaining to polling day, the Deputy Premier stressed the need to avoid revealing too many campaign strategies, likening it to not disclosing tactics in a war.
“In our campaigs, our aim is to introduce our candidate to the community. Even though he hails from the area, there may be some who are not yet acquainted with him.
“Therefore, our task is to intensify our campaign efforts until the last day and ensure that our candidate becomes more recognisable within the constituency,” he said after officiating at the Digital Entrepreneurship Awareness Course at Balai Raya Jepak today.
Awang Tengah stressed that they want to get their messages across to the community, while acknowledging that some messages are not true as they have been twisted by social media.
He pointed out that it is important for the people to choose the GPS candidate as their representative, so that they will not be excluded from planning and development.
“We want to explain what our government policies and initiatives are to the people.
“The important thing is that what we have planned is included in the 14 thrust manifesto that we launched yesterday. That is our commitment and we can execute our plans smoothly for the benefit of the community,” he said.
The Jepak by-election slated for Nov 4 will be a three-cornered fight between GPS’ Iskandar, Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) candidate Stevenson Joseph Sumbang, and Parti Aspirasi Rakyat Sarawak (ASPIRASI) candidate Chieng Lea Ping.
The seat became vacant following the death of Datuk Talib Zulpilip on Sept 15 from kidney complications.
The late Talib had served Jepak for six terms since 1996.
