KUCHING: The Sarawak Civil Community Awareness Association (SCCAA) has expressed concern over the unfortunate circumstances surrounding human trafficking, affecting several Sarawakians.

Its chairman Datuk John Lau said the association stands united against this pressing issue and is committed to taking steps to prevent such victimisation.

“Human traffickers often prey on vulnerabilities, unfortunate circumstances, unfamiliarity and inexperience, using manipulative tactics to exert control over their victims.

“They identify gaps in individuals’ lives and offer false promises to exploit them, capitalising on situations where people may find themselves desperate.

“While specific circumstances don’t directly cause human trafficking, they do create an environment of vulnerability that traffickers exploit, often enticing individuals with the promise of high salaries,” he said in a statement in response to the issue of many Sarawakians who are victims of human trafficking.

He stressed that everyone can play a crucial role in preventing human trafficking.

“The impact of human trafficking on victims is that it can cause mental and physical trauma, ostracism and lack of independent living skills where many victims lack the education and resources needed to live independently, often due to being trapped in trafficking situations from a young age,” he said.

He urged everyone to raise awareness by sharing information about human trafficking within their social circles so that friends and family are well-informed about this issue.

“Secondly, consider volunteering with a local counter-trafficking organisation like the SCCAA to support efforts to combat human trafficking.

“Thirdly, report suspicious job offers. If you encounter a high-paying job offer overseas, and it seems too good to be true, please inform your nearest police station immediately. They can provide guidance and assistance,” he said.

He added it is also important to be a supportive friend by extending a helping hand to those who may be alone and vulnerable in their community as friendship can make a significant difference.

“The SCCAA remains dedicated to raising awareness, preventing human trafficking, and supporting victims on their path to recovery.

“Together, we can make a difference and put an end to this heinous crime,” he said.
