SIBU: The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) conducted inspections at a total of 11 eateries and coffee shops here today (Nov 16), issuing compounds for various offences.

Two premises were found using plastic drinking straws, resulting in the confiscation of the straws.

Three compounds were issued to food premises for not having permits for using the five-foot way, and one compound was issued for operating with an expired licence. Additionally, a phone shop was inspected and fined for operating without a permit.

SMC Public Health, Environment, and Municipality Services Standing Committee vice-chairman Yiing Sy Huat stated that these joint inspections between SMC and enforcement officers occur monthly to ensure that premises owners maintain cleanliness and possess valid business licences.

“The results of these regular inspections show positive developments, where many coffee shop owners are becoming aware of the need to renew and display their business licences.

“However, there are still a few who have not done so. Some have also failed to renew their licences and provided various reasons. We hope that all premises owners will cooperate by renewing and displaying their business licences at all times,” he told the media.

The compounds were issued for offences such as expired pedestrian permits, no permit, failure to display a licence in the premises, an expired licence, and operating without a council operating licence.

Thirteen food premises were inspected during the operation, with eight failing to comply with existing rules and laws, and one receiving a warning notice.
