KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng wants an optimal living environment for children.

He said in keeping to the council’s child-friendly city policy, they were seeking not only to organise children’s activities but also learn about the city’s children’s needs and desires.

“We also want to listen to them; what do they want for the future of the city in which they live? It’s one thing to talk about defending their rights.

“We’re teaching them because the future belongs to them. It’s not ours. How are we going to plan it if we don’t listen to their feedback?

Wee speaks to reporters.

“So, I think these are a few steps we are moving into and I thank parents who allowed their children to come here,” he said.

Wee spoke to reporters about the council’s efforts yesterday during the ‘Let’s Plant a Tree’ programme organised at MBKS Community Library, here.

He emphasised the need to outline the child-friendly city policy, claiming that these children have the right to live in an encouraging environment in the city.

“We must educate these children at a young age about the importance of environmental protection and the need to plant trees.

“This is to have a continuing responsibility for all of us, and that is why we talk about environmental sustainability,” he mentioned.
