KUCHING: Sarawak’s government is actively developing a legal framework to facilitate the global commercialisation of tuak, a traditional Sarawakian rice wine.
This initiative is inspired by the international success of rice wines like Korea’s makgeolli and Japan’s sake. The Borneo Tuak Festival 2023, set to occur at The Hills Shopping Mall from November 24 to 26, aims to demonstrate tuak’s potential on the world stage.
Tuak is uniquely positioned to match the success of these globally recognised beverages, thanks to its authenticity, quality, and strategic marketing.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts and advisor to the Borneo Tuak Festival Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, disclosed his formal engagement with the State Attorney-General’s Chambers to establish a suitable legal framework for tuak.
“Tuak is a key part of our culture, so its preservation is crucial. We’re looking into the legal landscape for its global commercialisation. We need to understand the legal requirements, licenses, and permits fully. I’ve sought the AG Chambers’ assistance in identifying the applicable governing law, allowing us to market tuak locally, in neighbouring countries, and globally,” Ting said when met by reporters at Baitulmakmur Building 2 today (Nov 21).
Ting also noted the cultural importance of tuak, highlighting that its local production for personal consumption in longhouses isn’t problematic. However, he stressed the importance of addressing legalities for international market ventures.
“It’s vital to ensure tuak producers can not only create but also sell their products globally,” he added.
