Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang has called on Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to swiftly create an action plan for advancing renewable energy adoption, including solar power and wind turbines, in key locations within Sarawak.

This call comes in response to the Amendments to the Electricity Ordinance 2016 through the Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2023, presented by Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Julaihi Narawi, on Tuesday (Nov 21).

Billy cited Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who highlighted the formulation of the Energy Transition Policy (ETP) to ensure a secure, clean, affordable, efficient and reliable energy supply for Sarawak during the Sarawak Budget 2024 presentation on Monday (Nov 20).

Sarawak possesses abundant renewable energy sources such as hydro, wind, and solar power. Other sources include biogas, biomass, biofuel, and biological waste, which can generate clean and cost-effective electricity.

Reducing Sarawak’s dependence on conventional energy generation using fossil fuels is crucial to mitigating environmental pollution and controlling climate change and global temperature, Billy stressed.

He noted the need to expedite the integration of these energy projects into the off-grid electricity supply system in rural Sarawak.

The adoption of solar power not only contributes to planetary preservation but also promises long-term savings on electricity expenses for consumers.

He highlighted the timely nature of the Bill, aligning with the Sarawak government’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the promotion of green technology.

Ongoing efforts within the Post Covid-19 (PCDS) 2030 initiatives, including Sustainable Economic Development, Renewable Energy, and Social and Environmental Inclusion, underscore this commitment.

Sarawak aspires to align with PCDS 2030 to develop early strategic economic action plans under the Sarawak Renewable Energy Corridor or SCORE, launched in 2008.

Renewable hydro power will be a key engine in achieving the climate transition goal from conventional carbon dioxide (CO2) emitting electricity generation to carbon-free electricity.

As the largest provider of renewable energy in Malaysia, Sarawak can play a crucial role in accelerating this regional energy transition by collaborating with neighboring countries and sharing energy resources, he added.

Sarawak is privileged with abundant and untapped natural resources, presenting a significant opportunity for maximising green energy production.

This valuable asset aligns with the Sarawak government’s goal of establishing a robust power infrastructure by 2030, with the aim of achieving complete electricity coverage, minimising disruptions, and fostering localised economic development in rural regions.

In addition to renewable energy, the Energy Transition Policy will also encourage the development of green hydrogen, bioenergy, and Carbon Capture Usage Storage (CCUS).

These technologies can help decarbonise Sarawak’s energy sector to reduce ozone layer damage and achieve long-term climate goals.

This positions the state as a driver in introducing green energy entirely in terms of policy and implementation, not only in Malaysia but throughout Southeast Asia, Billy highlighted.
