MIRI: Narcotics police have arrested a local man for allegedly possessing RM218,000 worth of suspected methamphetamine in a car last Wednesday.

The operation codenamed ‘Ops Tapis Khas Se-Malaysia’ was conducted at around 7 pm along Jalan Kubu.

Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the police had stopped a car driven by the suspect for alleged involvement in drug trafficking activities.

“During inspections, the team managed to find five green coloured packets containing drugs believed to be methamphetamine.

“The drugs weighing 5.7kg, is estimated to be worth around RM218,000,” he said.

Following that, the 36-year-old suspect and the seized drugs were taken to the police station for further action.

He stated that the suspect is currently remanded to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty or if not sentenced to death, will be sentenced to life imprisonment and up to 12 lashes of the cane, upon conviction.

In addition, members of the public who have information regarding drug abuse activities, are advised to immediately report it to the nearest police station to ensure that such activity can be curbed and eradicated.
