KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) played an important role in the formation of the federal unity government a year ago which led to the country’s political stability.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said his government’s parliamentary strength was able to exceed two-thirds majority due to the support of GPS.
“Today is the one-year anniversary of my unity government … I cannot ignore the fact that Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and GPS played a crucial role in this matter.
“Although there were minor turbulences in the first few months within the unity government, we are able to talk about what we have achieved, including energy transition, digital transformation and economic vibrancy today – because the country is politically stable,” he said.
Thanking Abang Johari, he said GPS’ strong support has allowed the federal government to focus on energy transition for economic growth, employment and prosperity
Speaking at the Global Muslim Business Forum (GMBF) gala dinner at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here last night (Nov 28), Anwar said Sarawak is ahead of other states in addressing global climate change.
He said Sarawak has implemented a bold energy transition plan, where Abang Johari has already been talking about green energy such as hydrogen, hydropower and other initiatives to address the issue of climate change.
“Abang Johari has shown that leadership is about taking risks, innovation that will benefit the state, the country and the people. I hope everyone here will look into this (leadership) apart from business and collaboration opportunities during the forum,” he said.
Last year, GPS had given its backing to the formation of Anwar’s unity government in keeping with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree for a unity government.
The King had summoned GPS for an audience and the Sarawak delegation was led by Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. His Majesty had advised the formation of a unity government to overcome the country’s political turmoil.
