SIBU: A total of 112 students and 10 teachers attended a ‘Basic Chiropractic Course’ organised by the Sarawak Naturopathic Medicine Association (SNMA) in collaboration with Wong Nai Siong Secondary School (WNSSS) here today.

The course was declared open by Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, who was represented by Kapitan So Teck Kee.

In his text of speech, which was read by So, Tiang highlighted that traditional Chinese medicine is a cultural heritage of the Chinese for thousands of years, something every Chinese descendant should take pride in and actively promote.

“It’s an art of healing that should not fade away beyond China,” he said, adding some may argue that modern medicine, with its ever-evolving techniques, can cure many illnesses.

“Certainly, Chinese medicine has its own merits and specialities, addressing ailments through tailored herbal treatments, nurturing the spleen, lungs, kidneys, liver, and heart.

“However, to stay away from illnesses, we should maintain a cheerful mood, have a balanced diet, engage in regular exercise, avoid staying up late, and quit unhealthy habits like drinking and smoking.

“Remember, money can’t buy health; health is priceless. Without health, life loses its meaning,” he stressed.

Tiang also expressed gratitude to SNMA for choosing a school venue, WNSSS, for the event.

He said it not only exposes students to the exquisite skills of Chinese medicine, but it also leaves a positive impression on students interested in pursuing Chinese medicine courses in the future.

WNSS principal, Lu Yew Hiiung who also spoke, emphasised on the importance of spinal health care, especially since spinal problems are no longer a disease of the elderly.

According to him nowadays, many young people also suffer from back pain, which warrants attention to this issue.

“The spine is the most important part of the human body. If you neglect to take good care of your body and spine, you may face back pain. Therefore, it is extremely important to protect the health of your spine. The causes of spinal injuries include poor working posture for a long time, sprains, overuse of muscles and ligaments, insufficient calcium intake, etc.

“Chiropractic is a method of adjustment and health care for the spine, helping spinal patients who face back pain to relieve their pain problems. Through manipulation, the spinal structure is adjusted, incorrect physiological positions are corrected, the function and flexibility of the spine are improved, and the health care effect on the spine is enhanced,” he said.

Lu hoped that teachers and students can learn about spinal problems through this activity and learn how to reduce pain and treatment methods caused by the spine.

Also present were SNMA’s chairman Kong Pang Huat and vice chairman Thomas Wong.
