KUCHING: The potential of Puncak Borneo as a thriving tourism destination rich in natural beauty is rapidly increasing, thanks to enhanced road accessibility in many areas.
Deputy Minister for Transport, Datuk Dr Jerip Susil noted ongoing efforts to construct pedestrian walkways for access to approximately 45 waterfalls, prioritising beauty preservation and public safety.
“Most places in Puncak Borneo Heights can now be accessed by road. Even ‘above the clouds’ Kampung Sapit can be reached by road, though it is not fully completed.
“For this reason, the Sarawak government has approved RM20mil under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) to upgrade the road to that village.
“Construction will begin next year and is expected to be fully completed by 2026.”
He said this during a press conference after launching the “Borneo Heights Destination” magazine at Raia Hotel and Convention Kuching on Wednesday (Dec 6).
Dr Jerip also highlighted the preservation of natural beauty and uniqueness, citing Bengoh Dam as the only area lacking road access.
“People have the opportunity to take a boat while enjoying the natural beauty along the reservoir.
“At the same time, it allows them to walk and see the uniqueness of three villages located there.”
Encompassing over 1,000 square kilometres, Puncak Borneo boasts numerous attractive tourism products, including 48 caves, 45 waterfalls, and four natural hot springs.
With a focus on ecotourism, the area’s potential for socioeconomic growth is evident, provided it is equipped with comprehensive infrastructure.
The press conference was attended by GKCDA chief executive officer Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik and other distinguished guests.
