MIRI: The state government is expediting the implementation of the Cyber Security Framework through the cyber security unit, focusing on effective governance, policy, compliance, research, innovation, technology, capacity-building and collaboration.

General manager of Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) Datuk Dr Anderson Tiong Ing Heng said cybersecurity was necessary as cybercrime was rapidly growing.

“It extends beyond data and information protection to encompass infrastructure, transportation system, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, finance and societal aspects.

“Cooperation, knowledge and accurate communication about threats and how to deal with them are crucial steps in moving forward,” he said.

Tiong said this in his speech during the media night at Imperial Hotel in Miri on Wednesday (Dec 6).

He also said that education was essential for both end-users and the industry.

“Fostering a safety-conscious approach will help reduce risks at an early stage. However, cyberattacks will continue to occur, and it is crucial to be well prepared to minimise the risks to the entire system,” he added.

Tiong said that the Sarawak Digital Readiness Study, conducted by the Estonia e-Governance Academy (eGA), showed that the state was making notable progress in areas like cybersecurity, digital engagement, telecommunication infrastructure, and digital services.

Additionally, Sarawak was being recognised for its innovation and financing models.

“To support the growth of start-ups and the adoption of high technology, we’ve established 12 government-funded digital innovation hubs and a Digital Village.

“This has resulted in 26 high-tech start-ups and 27 high-tech research projects moving towards commercialisation.

“Additionally, we have set up 45 Digital Community Centres that have initiated about 3,000 community-based programs, benefitting around 80,000 participants,” he said.
