KUCHING: An unemployed man was fined RM1,500 or sentenced to three months in jail by the Magistrate’s Court here today for intentionally causing injury to his brother-in-law by throwing a food can opener last Wednesday (Dec 6).
Khairunnas, 23, pleaded guilty to one charge read by the interpreter before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan.
According to the charge, he intentionally caused painful injuries to his 37-year-old brother-in-law in front of a house in Taman Mawar here, around 9.40 am on Dec 6.
Therefore, he was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A of the same code, which, if found guilty, could result in imprisonment for up to seven years, a fine, or both.
According to the case facts, during the incident, the complainant, who is the accused’s brother-in-law, was in a car outside their house when he was suddenly hit by the accused using a food can opener.
As a result of the incident, the complainant suffered minor injuries on the left side of his face, the back of his left ear, and scratches on his right and left arms.
Concerned for his safety, the complainant promptly filed a police report for further action and investigation, leading to the arrest of the accused on the same day.
It is understood that the accused admitted to injuring his brother-in-law because he was making noise outside the house and scolding others.
The prosecution of the case was handled by Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
