KOTA SAMARAHAN: Chinese students from the University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) are urged not only to learn about their culture but to effectively showcase it to the public, ensuring a nuanced understanding.

This perspective was shared by Political Secretary to the Premier Kho Teck Wan during the UNIMAS Chinese Cultural Night 2023 held at UNIMAS last night (Dec 8).

“Because back in the day, we have always seen how our culture and background are often being misunderstood.

“That is why we established the UNIMAS Chinese Cultural Association back in 1997 and this is for the Chinese student to be able to represent the Chinese people and showcase the culture and background to the people,” she said in her speech, representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian during the event.

“There is a whole lot of Chinese culture that people may or may not know so it is important for the students to continue to learn and introduce it to the people.

“That is why the people from other races in Sarawak such as Malay, Iban, Bidayuh manage to learn our culture, and they love it.

“Because of us learning each other’s culture and background, we are able to live together in peace and harmony up to this day. We sit down together in one place, having our meals in one place, it is beautiful to see it,” she added.

Kho also encouraged students not only to continue learning and preserving their Chinese heritage but also to share the unique Sarawak culture with the world wherever they go.

She also commended the organising committee of the event comprising UNIMAS students.

“You seek for sponsors, and you are able to do it, and that is important when you learn how to organise a programme,” she added.
