KUCHING: Sarawak gets to enjoy low electricity prices due to its ample hydroelectric resources, thus making it highly conducive for promoting the adoption of electric vehicles (EV).
In stating this, Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, Xing WeiPing, hoped to see more Chinese EV on the roads in the state in future.
“Currently, climate change has become a global challenge, and major countries have set carbon neutrality and carbon reduction goals.
“The development of the new energy vehicle industry is of significant importance in addressing global climate change and building a clean and beautiful world.
“In recent years, the Sarawak government has actively developed the hydrogen energy industry and participated in the construction of the international carbon market, becoming a beacon in leading the economy towards green and sustainable development in Malaysia,” he said.
He was speaking at the opening of Great Wall Motor’s (GWM) first flagship 4S Service Centre and launching of GWM’s Ora Good Cat EV held at the Yu Lee Hong (YLH) Motors Sdn Bhd’s premises here on Sunday (Dec 10) evening.
Xing said as more Chinese new energy vehicles (NEV) enter Sarawak, cooperation between China and Sarawak in areas such as the construction of smart urban transportation systems, intelligent grid upgrades, and new infrastructure will open up more cooperation opportunities.
“The Chinese government actively supports the development of the new energy vehicle industry, making China the largest production hub and market for new energy vehicles.
“In 2022, China’s sales of NEV reached 6.887 million units, including 679,000 units for export, a year-on-year increase of 120 per cent, achieving outstanding growth,” he said.
He added in the first half of this year, the export volume of Chinese NEV had surpassed the level of the entire previous year, reaching 800,000 units, showing strong momentum.
“So far, China’s NEV industry has established a technology innovation system centred on enterprises, market-oriented, and collaborative research and application, gaining broad recognition in the international market,” he said.
Xing also welcomed the people of Sarawak to actively explore and experience NEV, initiating a more environmentally friendly lifestyle.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian was also present to officiate at the opening of the service centre and launching of GWM’s Ora Good Cat EV.
Among others present were Padawan Municipal Council chairman Tan Kai; GWM Sales Malaysia Sdn Bhd managing director Cui AnQi; YLH Autoworld Sdn Bhd directors JP Hong Boon Siong, Hong Boon Pau, Hong Siew Hua and Lim Yian Choo.
