KUCHING: The Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) is actively promoting awareness of sustainable used cooking oil usage within communities.
In line with this, the Kuching branch of MNS will organise a Dishwashing Soap Making Workshop from Used Cooking Oil on Dec 17, from 1 to 5pm at Hotel Telang Usan, Jalan Ban Hock here.
This initiative is part of MNS’ ongoing efforts to raise awareness regarding the sustainable use of used cooking oil.
The workshop will be conducted by Husna Juliani Hasbialah, a second-year Universiti Malaysia Sarawak student with experience in soap making since the age of 15. Her interest was influenced by her mother, Noor Jehan Abu Bakar, currently serving as the chairperson of MNS Kuantan branch.
Participants are required to bring their pre-filtered used cooking oil, prepared a day or two before the workshop. To clean it, the used cooking oil should be heated with aromatic ingredients such as pandan leaves, kaffir lime leaves, lime peel, cloves, or others, depending on personal preference or availability at home. After the oil cools, it should be strained to separate aromatic elements or any residues.
Approximately 500ml of oil can produce about 750ml of dishwashing soap. Participants are also advised to bring old plastic containers or empty drink boxes to place the soap as it solidifies and wear rubber gloves.
Participation is free for MNS members, while non-members or expired members will be charged a fee of RM70 per person. For any enquiries, email mnskuching@gmail.com.
