BAU: The village chiefs and community leaders here have been urged to be aware of the issue of drug abuse among the population.

Deputy Minister of Transport (Maritime and Riverine), Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, said the police have been making various efforts to curb the problem of drug abuse.

“Therefore, I hope that the village chiefs, as well as the community leaders, can mobilise their efforts to assist the police in eradicating such crimes,” he said when attending the closing ceremony of the Village Chief, Community Leaders, and Women’s Role in Addressing Drug Abuse Issues recently.

The Tasik Biru assemblyman also said there is a need for awareness programmes to be provided to community leaders, families, and individuals through non-governmental organizations (NGOs), religious institutions, and others about the dangers of drug issues and substances.

Later, at the same event, 16 village chiefs from the Tasik Biru constituency received their reappointment letters, while one village chief received a new appointment.

Also present were the Bau District officer and Bau District One-Stop Committee for Addressing Drug and Substance Abuse Issues (OSC MIDS) chairman, Constantine Gerald David Jonas; Bau District Council secretary, Ong Chin Ping; Bau District Bidayuh community leader, Pemanca Robert Tom Juin; and Bau District Chinese community leader, Bong Jong Long.
