KUCHING: Police arrested four ‘mat rempit’ locals for dangerous stunts on their motorcycles along Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Rahman Yaakub here over the weekend.

‘Ops Samseng Jalanan’ was conducted by nine personnel from the Kuching Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division from 8pm on Saturday (Dec 16) until 4.15am on Sunday (Dec 17).

Kuching deputy police chief Supt Merbin Lisa in a statement said the team arrested four riders aged 18 and 19, and took them to the district police headquarters for further action.

“They were performing ‘Superman’ stunts and ‘Wheelie’ stunts on their motorcycles, which were dangerous to themselves and other road users.

“Because of that, all four are being investigated under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a fine up to RM15,000 and a prison sentence of up to five years as well as licence disqualification for up to five years.

“The team also confiscated four motorcycles to facilitate investigations,” he said.

Merbin said such operations will be carried out from time to time to detect drivers or riders who drive or ride dangerously in an effort to reduce the rate of road accidents, especially fatal accidents in the district.
