SIBU: The initiative by University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) to offer a zero-fee foundation programme supports Sarawak’s plans to offer free tertiary education to all Sarawakian students by 2026, said vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid.

The zero-fee foundation programme actually started two years ago.

Khairuddin delivers his speech.

“This initiative aligns with Sarawak’s vision for 2030, propelling the state to an economically advanced future,” he said in his speech when officiating at the UTS alumni graduation night at the Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Chancellor Hall here last night (Dec 17).

He said all state-owned higher learning institutions will offer free education to high school leavers, adding that UTS will be the selected free education university in the central zone of Sarawak.

“Education is the cornerstone of progress, and by offering free tertiary education, Sarawak not only prepares a skilled workforce for its vision but also eases the financial burden on low-income families.

“UTS is proud to contribute to this vision and remains committed to shaping future leaders who will play a pivotal role in Sarawak’s economic advancement,” he said.

Meanwhile, on the dinner, Khairuddin said the highlight of the event is recognising and honouring the outstanding achievements of UTS graduates.

“I am thrilled to announce the presentation of various awards, each carrying its own significance and value. The Leadership Excellence Award (LEAd), a unique and exclusive recognition by UTS, will be awarded to 120 students.

“The award is a testament to their commitment, dedication, and leadership demonstrated through their participation in various co-curricular activities.

“The LEAd not only reflects academic prowess but also emphasises the importance of leadership and emotional intelligence — a crucial differentiator in today’s competitive world,” he said.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg unveiled three state incentives for UTS students on Nov 10, 2021, aimed at enhancing higher education accessibility in Sarawak.

The UTS Foundation Scholarship covers RM10,000 tuition per student while the UTS Undergraduate and Postgraduate Scholarships offer a 50 per cent fee discount.

Meanwhile, the UTS Bursary Scheme — in partnership with Yayasan Sarawak — provides 80 per cent tuition reduction for B40 and M40 Sarawakians, supporting 100 Bumiputera and 100 non-Bumiputera students annually.
