KUCHING: The Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) will continue to support the Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute (TROPI) to carry out research and conserve tropical peat in the state.
According to the minister, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said, TROPI’s efforts are in line with Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy Plan (PCDS) 2030 which involves sustainable development, economic prosperity, social inclusion and environmental sustainability.
“I will provide strong support for the development and growth of TROPI as an effective and efficient research and development institution in Sarawak,” he said.
He said this when speaking at the TROPI 15th Anniversary Ceremony and Appreciation Night 2023 at Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute, here, Tuesday night.
Also present were the director of TROPI, Datuk Dr Lulie Melling, as well as the permanent secretary of MEITD, Datuk Azmi Bujang.
At the recent Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) session, Sagah informed that TROPI recorded a proud success when it became the only scientific agency in Malaysia involved in the Observation Network Biodiversity Research Project (BON).
TROPI also received an invitation to participate in the Living Lab for Wetland Forests (LiWeFor) project and the PeatlandN2O (Nitrous oxide) Project which is an international collaboration with the University of Tartu, Estonia, the University of Helsinki (Finland) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (German), funded by the Research Board Europe (ERC).
In 2024, TROPI is expected to participate in the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) international congress in South Korea and the Centennial of the International Union of Soil Science Society Congress in Italy.
