MIRI: Student members of the Accounting Club at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently visited four prominent companies in Kuala Lumpur.
The companies were Averis, a leading Global Business Services provider; PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers), a global professional services network; Baker Hughes, an international industrial service giant; and Grant Thornton, a key player in audit, tax, and advisory services in Malaysia.
Organised in collaboration with ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), this initiative aimed to offer the participating students a first-hand experience of the practical facets of accounting, auditing, and financial services across diverse industries.
It provided a unique opportunity for the students to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications.
The Curtin Malaysia Accounting Club, in a statement yesterday, said it believed that exposure to industry leaders enhanced the students’ understanding and prepared them for the dynamic challenges of the professional landscape.
Meanwhile, interactions with professionals from Averis, PwC, Baker Hughes, and Grant Thornton allowed the students to gain insights into the latest industry trends, best practices and the vital role accountants play in driving business success.
Over the span of two days, they observed the operations and practices of each company, gained exposure to real-world accounting scenarios, and engaged with professionals to better understand the nuances of financial management in different business contexts.
The Accounting Club also facilitated discussions, reflections and knowledge-sharing sessions among the students to recap what they had learned on the visit and connect concepts and theories they had learned in the classroom to real-world applications they had observed.
This immersive experience undoubtedly contributed to the holistic development of the participating students, fostering a deeper appreciation for the nuances of their chosen field.
Lecturer Dr. Jong Ling of the Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics at Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Business, who is advisor to the Accounting Club, commended the club for organising the industrial visit, saying it underscored the commitment of the Accounting Club, ACCA and the Faculty of Business to provide students opportunities for practical learning and professional development.
“The exposure they gained during the visit will inevitably enhance their understanding of the accounting profession and contribute to their future success in the field. It also served as a networking opportunity, fostering connections between students and industry leaders,” she said.
Curtin Malaysia offers Curtin’s three-year Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting, which helps students develop expertise in areas such as auditing, taxation, insolvency, compliance, accounting systems and technology. Accounting is also offered in a double-major combination with Finance, where students can develop additional skills in corporate finance for big business.
The Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting is recognised by professional bodies like CPA Australia, ACCA, Chartered Accountants ANZ, CIMA, and MICPA, and with that comes improved career prospects for graduates, assurance of the highest academic and industry standards, networking opportunities, and access to professional development programmes offered by the various bodies.
