SIBU: Around 2,000 members of the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) from various walks of life gathered for the PDP Pre Christmas Dinner here last night (Dec 24).
The dinner was filled with various programmes, encompassing lively performances, lucky draws, and various interactive activities.
PDP President Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, in his speech, said the dinner was made possible due to the mutual understanding and respect within the community.
“We must remember that (in Malaysia) we consist of people from different religions and races, celebrating various occasions and festivals.
“If we do not respect others (religions and races), it is impossible for us to maintain our country’s peace and harmony. We will be like other countries that are at war with each other,” said the Federal Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture.
Tiong, who is also the Dudong assemblyman, called on the people, especially in his constituency, to continue nurturing respect and understanding within communities.
He stressed that the majority should not oppress the minority. Instead, both factions should embrace tolerance.
“Taking the Iban community (within the longhouse) for instance, some have a religion, but some might not and still stick to their traditional customs. If they do not understand each other and do not tolerate each other, they might argue.
“So, I urge the community leaders, especially in the Dudong constituency, to ensure that the people under them respect and understand one another (religiously and culturally),” he added.
Also present were Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) Deputy President cum Engkelili assemblyman Dr Johnical Rayong Ngipa, PDP Dudong chief Datuk Teo Boon Siew, PDP Information chief Joshua Ting Fu Ying and others.
