NEW DELHI: A head-on collision between a passenger bus and a dumper truck killed at least 12 people in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday night.
The bus overturned and caught fire following the collision, a police official told reporters.
Sixteen people were also injured in the accident that took place in the Guna district, about 180 km from the state capital Bhopal.
Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav ordered an investigation into the accident.
He directed the district administration to provide 400,000 rupees (RM22,250) each to the families of those killed and 50,000 rupees each to the seriously injured.
Hundreds of thousands of people are killed and injured in road accidents every year in India, with poor driving skills and violation of traffic rules among the major causes of disasters.
Madhya Pradesh alone recorded 54,432 road accidents in 2022 in which 13,427 people were killed and 55,168 injured, according to official data. – BERNAMA
