RM1,000 fine for illegal lottery

KUCHING: A local man was fined RM1,000, in default three weeks in jail, by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday (Dec 29) for purchasing illegal lottery tickets last month.

Frederick John Kennedy, 29, pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which was read before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

The charges stated that he committed the offense in a grocery store at Batu 7, Jalan Penrissen, around 4.45 pm on Nov 4.

If convicted, he could be fined up to RM5,000 or face a jail term of up to six months, or both.

According to the case facts, the police from IPD Padawan raided the grocery store, suspected of involvement in illegal lottery activities.

As a result of the raid, the 29-year-old local man was arrested for purchasing illegal lottery tickets.

Several items were seized from the accused, including a mobile phone, a black pen, a piece of paper with lottery numbers, and cash totalling RM100.

Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the case, while the accused was unrepresented by legal counsel.
