KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has hinted at upcoming significant developments as Sarawak gears up for the arrival of New Year 2024.
During the 2024 New Year Countdown at Kuching Waterfront, Abang Johari teased an imminent takeover of substantial organisations within the state, refraining from divulging details until the official takeover occurs.
“I believe in 2024, our success will be continued and we will have a stronger economic performance.
“We may take over some large organisations in 2024 and let me announce it when we take over it later. But God willing, I am confident that our state’s income will continue to grow,” he said in his speech.
Abang Johari mentioned an invitation to speak in Italy next month but expressed regret for being unable to attend due to his commitment to the Sultan of Johor’s swearing-in as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“If I can go, I will be the one to teach these westerners. It feels like… children from Sarawak teaching the westerners..
“Unfortunately I could not attend because the Agong will be sworn in… I was asked to speak about the climate and the new economy there,” he said.
Addressing educational prospects for Sarawakian youth, he assured the sustainability of free tertiary education as long as the people of Sarawak stand united behind the state government.
“We have a strong support system and are grateful for the support received,” he said.
He added that he together with his Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Cabinet members has set a goal to ensure that in 2026, all Sarawak children can pursue studies at the university level without having to pay fees.
“Today and 2024, then 2025, and 2026, we will continue to strive to achieve this goal.
“In fact, we are confident that the economy at that time will be more stable, allowing us to provide university education for free without excluding anyone,” he said.
