MOSCOW: A high-speed train derailed close to San Francisco, catching fire and leaving nine people injured, the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) serving the San Francisco Bay Area in California said, reported Sputnik.
“The partial derailment occurred at an interlocking located between the Orinda and Lafayette BART stations shortly after 9 am,” the transit agency said in a statement on Monday.
“The incident train was an eight-car Antioch bound train. Two cars derailed. There was smoke and flames. All riders were safely evacuated. There were no major injuries, though nine people were transported to area hospitals for evaluation. The Orinda Fire Department responded and extinguished the flames.”
The train has been successfully re-railed by a crane, which arrived on site, the transit agency said, adding that crews have already begun repairs works to the damaged sections of the tracks.
The agency said there is currently no train service between particular stations due to the derailment accident, adding that the bus service with all station stops in both directions has been provided. – BERNAMA-SPUTNIK
