KUCHING: Hope Place recently extended assistance to a 40-year-old man, Ting Kiong Sieng, by securing a new residence for him after he spent a month living near a staircase in a Stutong shoplot here.

In a statement, the non-governmental organisation (NGO) said the man suffers from epilepsy and stroke.

“He used to receive food aid from Hope Place in 2022, when he was living with his wife and four children.

“However, they moved to Sibu and were never heard of again. So, we are shocked to find him living near a staircase alone,” the NGO said.

According to Ting, he returned to Kuching last year as his marriage was on the rocks, while his health went downhill.

He also started to have mental health issues and was actually admitted at Sentosa Hospital last year for treatment. He is currently unemployed.

Hope Place managed to rent a room after receiving a donation from an anonymous donor, who was willing to pay for two months’ rent for Ting.

“We also provided him with several household essentials, which includes mattress, blankets, rice cooker, electric kettle, some food aid and we will continue to support Ting in food supplies once every two months,” the NGO said.
