KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) has welcomed the appointment of Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar as the eighth Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the former Senate President is the most appropriate person to hold the post given his vast experience.
“Wan Junaidi’s extensive experience makes him the most appropriate person as new Sarawak Governor at this stage of Sarawak nation building,” he said in a Facebook post.
The SUPP president said Wan Junaidi was instrumental when it came to the negotiation on Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
“This includes the involvement in matters pertaining to the health autonomy, education autonomy, Sarawak special grant under the Article 112D of the Federal Constitution, and one-third parliamentary seats for Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.
Meanwhile, SUPP secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting said Wan Junaidi’s tenure as Sarawak Governor will bring about positive changes and contribute to the prosperity and well-being of Sarawak.
“His wealth of experience and passion for the community during his decades in public service will undoubtedly guide him in making decisions that benefit all Sarawakians,” he said.
He also said Wan Junaidi’s leadership qualities, vision, and tireless efforts will translate to him carrying out his public duties with great responsibility, diligence and grace.
“His commitment to public service and dedication to the betterment of our community have not gone unnoticed, and it is with great joy and pride that all of us have learned of his new role.
“May His Excellency be blessed with good health and an abundance of joy, peace, and fulfilment. We wish Tun every success in his new role,” Ting said.
Wan Junaidi was appointed as the Yang Di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak by Article 1 of the Sarawak Constitution for four years, effective Jan 26, 2024, until Jan 26, 2028.
